Yiannis is a registered nutritionist and dietitian and is currently a senior lecturer in Nutrition at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. He is the Programme Director for the MSc Nutrition and Genetics and he also does research in the area of nutrient-gene interactions. Prior to joining St Mary’s he was a lecturer at the London Metropolitan University, where he also completed a PGCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and he holds a fellowship to the Higher Education Academy. Yiannis completed an honours degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen followed by an MSc in Human Nutrition and Metabolism at the University of Aberdeen. He studied for his PhD at the Rowett Research Institute in the field of molecular nutrition investigating the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular disease. During his PhD he was trained on genetic, metabolomic and proteomic analyses in relation to food and nutrition. He did his postdoctoral research project at the University of Reading where he explored the sensorial quality of hospital food in the UK. In his current post at St Mary’s University, Twickenham he is involved in research that focuses on the genetic aspects of salt-sensitivity and hypertension as well as the genetic predisposition to childhood obesity.
